13.05.00 JAM IN PAPER PATH, Blank Pages, and 54 Errors

HP Color LaserJet 4600 and 4650 Series Printer - 13.05.00 JAM IN PAPER PATH, Blank Pages, and 54 Errors

The 13.05.00 JAM IN PAPER PATH error occurs with media delayed in the Electrostatic Transport Belt (ETB) area, anywhere between PS3, the paper leading edge sensor in the Paper Pickup Unit, and PS11, the Fuser Inlet Paper sensor. 13.05 errors may also be followed by a 41.3 UNEXPECTED SIZE IN TRAY XX, or a 54 error. These errors can be caused if one or more of the print cartridge shutters are not opening, a stuck shutter on a print cartridge, or a malfunctioning pressure gear, 66T cam/gear or tension spring. It can also be caused by unsupported media. Verify the specifications of the type of media being used.

Troubleshooting the print cartridge shutters

Cartridge shutters may not open and close correctly, causing paper path obstructions and media delays. To check the toner shutter lever for proper operation, do the following:

Open and close the ETB several times. As the ETB is opened, the shutters should close, and as the ETB closes, all four shutters should open. All four shutters should move in unison. See Figure 1.

Figure 1: ETB and cartridges

Remove all four print cartridges.
With all four print cartridges removed, inspect the toner shutter levers in the printer.
Open and close the ETB several times.
Verify that the levers move up while closing the ETB, and down as it is opened. See Figure 2.

Figure 2: Shutter levers

NOTE: If all four print cartridges are not removed, they may lock into the wrong side of the toner shutter levers, making the symptom worse.

Inspect each print cartridge for proper shutter operation.
Manually open and close the shutters by moving the lever on the left-hand side of the cartridge. The shutter should spring back closed. See Figure 3.

Figure 3: Cartridge shutter in the closed and open position

1 - Closed cartridge shutter

2 - Open cartridge shutter

Verify that the shutter hinge is seated correctly on the left and right side of the cartridge. The shutter hinge attaches to the cartridge below the blue handle. Figure 4, call-out 2 shows where to attach the hinge on the left side of the printer. The location is similar on the right side.

2 - Close up of the left-side hinge

If the cartridge shutter is not functioning properly, attempt to reassemble it to get the printer working temporarily. If necessary, replace the defective cartridge.
Reinstall all four cartridges
Verify that the print cartridge lever is in the down position before reinstalling the cartridges.
Open and close the ETB a few times again, to verify that the shutters are opening and closing in unison.
Print a test page. If the jam reoccurs, continue to the next step

Troubleshooting the ETB
A damaged ETB can delay the media in the paper path. To check the ETB for damage, do the following:

Visually inspect the ETB belt membrane, and verify that there are no large rips or tears.
Lift up the edge of the belt, and inspect the four transfer rollers. See Figure 5. They should be evenly spaced with the print cartridge image drums (when the ETB is closed). The plastic holders on each end of the roller (white on the left, black on the right) are spring loaded, and when you push down on them, they should spring back into place.

Print a test page.
If all of the cartridges and ETB seem to function properly, but the jam reoccurs, replace the left cap, tension spring, pressure gear and 66T cam/gear.
