Operator Panel Lockout

Control Panel Security

The control panel can be disabled or enabled – with multiple levels of enabled. The ability to control this is available using a “power-on key press” (and also through SNMP MIB). A “Power-on key press” involves pressing multiple keys while power to the printer is turned on. The keys should remain pressed until a confirmation prompt is displayed which affirms the requested panel functionality. The following table describes the keys used and the panel functionality that will be available with each setting.

Important Note: The Functionality Setting will be stored over power-down (in non-volatile memory). Resetting factory defaults through Menu mode will not affect this functionality setting.

Functionality Setting Power-On Keys Description Disabled Start + Menu The only key presses allowed are 1) pressing Start to “continue” from continuable-errors and 2) the Power-On key sequences described in this table.

Enabled Level 1 Start + Status User is not allowed to enter Menu mode or perform a Cancel request. The remainder of panel functionality is available.

Enabled Level 2 Start + Previous No Menu mode changes are allowed. Menu mode can be used to traverse the menu settings and print menus, but setting changes will not be accepted. The remainder of panel functionality is available.

Enabled Start + Return Panel is completely functional.

Web Page Security

Password security is implemented in the printer’s web pages using a Java Script “cookie”.

Web Page Behavior

The behavior as far as the web page user is concerned is that when "Submit" is pressed (for any of the forms):

If there is no password configured on the printer - then the Submit will go ahead and submit the form.

If there IS a password configured, a dialog-box will appear prompting the user to enter a password (this box has OK and CANCEL buttons).

If CANCEL is clicked or OK is clicked and no password has been entered, the password box will close, an error box will be displayed reading "Error: No password entered - Submit aborted", and the page displaying the form will be refreshed to its original content.

If a password is entered that does NOT match the configured password, the password box will close, an error box will be displayed reading "Error: Invalid password entered - Submit aborted", and the page displaying the form will be refreshed to its original content.

If a password is entered that DOES match the configured password, the form will be submitted - and a cookie will be generated. As long as this cookie exists, the user will not be prompted for a password on subsequent "Submits" for any form.

If the user has cookies disabled, he will have to enter the password for each “Submit”.

Configuring a web page password on the printer

Currently the password is configured on the printer using a special power-on key sequence (STATUS and RETURN). These keys should be pressed and held at power-on until “Password” is displayed on the top line of the display, and the current password is displayed on the bottom line of the display (if there has never been a password configured, the bottom line will be blank). The password may be entered or modified by pressing "Select" or "Return" to move the cursor right/left through the password string displayed (note: pressing Return when the cursor is on the first character will cause a Return from the menu with no change, pressing Select when the cursor is on the last character will cause the entire string to be "entered"). When the cursor is on each character position, the “Next” and “Previous” keys may be used to modify the character.
