Super NVRAM initialization Use the following steps to perform a super NVRAM initialization. CAUTION: A super NVRAM initialization will clear all settings including the page counts, serial numbers, formatter number, or service ID. It should only be performed by a trained Service Technician. Performing a super NVRAM initialization Turn the printer off. Press and hold the (GO) button. Turn the printer on and continue to hold (GO) for at least 50 seconds. Release the (GO) button. NOTE: The Ready light turns on during a super NVRAM initialization. Restore Printer Information Using PJL Commands PJL commands are useful when an NVRAM initialization has been performed or the formatter has been replaced. After the NVRAM initialization is performed, restore the serial number, page counts, color page counts, and formatter number. Use the MS-DOS Editor to create a file (or files) to send directly to the printer to restore printer data. NOTE: To send PJL commands directly to the printer, the printer must be directly connected to the computer using an IEEE-1284 compliant parallel cable. PJL commands cannot be sent to the printer by using a USB or a network connection. Using the following PJL commands to restore the printer information to the new formatter: ESC%-12345X@PJL SET SERVICEMODE=HPBOISEID @PJL SET SERIALNUMBER=XXXXXXXXXXX @PJL SET PAGES=XXX @PJL SET COLORPAGES=XXX @PJL SET SERVICEMODE=EXIT ESC%-12345X The X's in the serial number, formatter number, pages, and color pages fields are variables that must be replaced with the information specific to the printer. The Configuration page contains the actual information for the printer. Restore Printer Information Using the MS-DOS Command Prompt and the MS-DOS Editor Use the MS-DOS command prompt and MS-DOS Editor to enter the PJL commands. Opening an MS-DOS command prompt windows in Windows 2000 and Windows XP: Click Start, then Run from the Windows desktop. Type cmd and then click OK. An MS-DOS command prompt window opens. At the command prompt, type cd, and then press Enter. Opening an MS-DOS command prompt windows in Windows Me Click Start, Programs, Accessories, and then MS-DOS Prompt from the Windows desktop. An MS-DOS command prompt window opens. At the command prompt, type cd, and then press Enter. Opening an MS-DOS command prompt windows in Windows 98 Click Start, Programs, and then MS-DOS Prompt from the Windows desktop. An MS-DOS command prompt window opens. At the command prompt, type cd, and then press Enter. Opening a file in the MS-DOS editor At the command prompt (C:>, type EDIT PJLREST and then press Enter. The MS-DOS Prompt Edit file window opens. Creating the Escape (Esc) sequence in the MS-DOS editor Press Ctrl plus the P buttons on the keyboard, and then release the keys. Press and release the Esc key. The editor inserts an arrow symbol pointing to the left, which indicates to the printer that the text following the symbol is a command, not text that should be printed. NOTE: A left-arrow symbol should appear, which indicates to the printer that the text following the symbol is a command. If the left-arrow symbol does not appear, or if another symbol appears, then delete any characters or spaces and repeat Steps 1 and 2 until the left-arrow symbol appears. Type, in uppercase letters, the remainder of the command after the symbol. NOTE: Following is an example of the MS-DOS Editor windows, when restoring the serial number.->%-12345X@PJL SET SERVICEMODE=HPBOISEID@PJL SET SERIALNUMBER=XXXXXXXXX@PJL SET SERVICEMODE=EXIT->%-12345X Saving the PJLREST file Press Alt plus the F buttons on the keyboard to open the File drop-down menu. User the cursor-down key to highlight Exit, and then press Enter. If Save-File reads "C:PJLREST," and a flashing cursor highlights Yes, then press Enter. After pressing Enter, the command prompt (C:>) appears. Sending the file to the printer Make sure that the printer is in the Ready state. Type copy PJLREST [printer port] at the command prompt (C:>). For example, copy PJLREST LPT1. Press Enter. The data light on the printer should flash. When complete, the printer returns to the Ready state and the MS-DOS window displays the command prompt. Type exit and then press Enter to return to Windows. Print a Configuration page to verify that the printer information is restored.
