HP Color LaserJet 2500 Series Printer - IC107 Motor Failure Results in Error 59.A0 Blank Pages, Flashing Developer Lights, or a Light Burning Smell IC107, an IC motor driver that controls the rotary engagement motor, is failing. The rotary engagement motor provides two vital functions: moves the e-label reader into position to read the developer e-labels, and moves the carousel forward so that the developer roller can engage the OPC. The IC failure has presented one or more of the following symptoms: The IC107 fails to engage the motor to move the developers against the OPC, resulting in a blank pages. The error code 59.AO is written to the error log, and both the GO and Ready lights flash as the secondary light pattern. The IC107 fails to engage the e-label reader causing all of the developing lights to flash. On rare occasions, the IC107 may upon direct failure cause a light burning smell to emanate from the product. Printing blank pages If the unit is printing blank pages, perform the following to troubleshoot the issue. Perform an engine test. The engine test is used to verify that the print engine is functioning correctly. The formatter is bypassed during an engine test, so the engine test is useful for isolating print problems. Because the engine test prints horizontal lines along the entire printable area of a page, it is also useful for checking and adjusting registration. Open Tray 1, the multipurpose tray. Press the engine-test switch, inside Tray 1 on the left side, just below the front cover. NOTE: The formatter must be connected to the ECU to perform an engine test. Otherwise, the printer will not print the engine test. Figure 1: Engine test switch
The engine test page will print a series of 2-inch (50.8 mm) lines in each color. If the engine test does not print correctly, print an internal test page. If the page is still blank, remove any EIO devices or printer cables. Reseat the memory DIMM. Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cable. Open the plastic outer DIMM door on the right side of the printer. Open the metal inner DIMM door on the right side of the printer. Release the locks on each side of the DIMM slot. Remove all extra DIMM and reseat the 64 MB DIMM. Reseat the Firmware DIMM. Upgrade the firmware if necessary. NOTE: HP Color LaserJet 2500 only: Check the serial number of the printer. If the fourth digit is an H, the unit has firmware (MROM) on board the formatter and cannot be upgraded without replacing the formatter. Verify power to the wall and/or change the power source, if possible. If the unit continues to print blank pages, replace the rotary engagement (carousel) motor and/or the DC controller. Error 59.A0 or Lights Flashing Open the HP Toolbox and check supplies status and the color page count. Manually remove the print cartridges from the unit, if possible, and verify that the developer roller will turn. If a roller on one of the cartridges will not turn, replace that cartridge. Perform a cold reset to clear the error condition and try printing again. Upgrade the firmware if necessary. NOTE: HP Color LaserJet 2500 only: Check the serial number of the printer. If the fourth digit is an H, the unit has firmware (MROM) on board the formatter and cannot be upgraded without replacing the formatter. If the printer continues to experience the 59.A0 and/or the flashing lights, replace the rotary engagement (carousel) motor and/or the DC controller. Light burning smell On rare occasions, the IC107 may upon direct failure cause a light burning smell to emanate from the product. If this occurs, perform the following: Verify that the media is within specification for the product. Verify power to the wall and/or change the power source, if possible. If the printer continues to emit a light burning smell, replace the rotary engagement (carousel) motor and/or the DC controller. Parts required (part numbers are subject to change) DC Controller RG5-6959-060CN 24v Rotary Engagement Motor (carousel motor) RH7-1533-000CN In most cases, replacing the IC motor driver (carousel motor) will resolve the issue; however, it may be necessary to replace the DC controller. Repair and replacement instructions Right- and left-side covers Follow the steps below to remove the right-side cover. Then remove the left-side cover in the same manner. Remove one screw (Call-out 1) from the lower edge of the cover. Figure 2: Right-side cover
1 - One (1) screw Grasp the cover by the handle and by the top and then pull the cover out gently, rotating the cover away from the printer as you lift it. CAUTION: To avoid breaking two internal tabs lift the cover straight up. Figure 3: Right-side cover tabs
1 - Two (2) tabs Repeat Steps 1 and 2 to remove the left-side cover. Reinstall note: Reattach the tab closer to the front of the printer before reattaching the back tab. Carousel motor (J704) Remove the left-side cover. Unplug one cable connector (Call-out 1). Remove two screws (Call-out 2). Figure 4: Carousel motor (J704)

Formatter cage removal Remove the following cover and assembly: Right-side cover Interface cover Unplug the flat flexible cable (Call-out 1). Use a flatblade screwdriver to pinch the tab on the cable connector (Call-out 2) to unplug the connector. NOTE: It may be easier to unplug the connector after completing Step 6. Remove three screws (Call-out 3) from the formatter cage. Figure 7: Formatter cage

Release the cables from two cable-holders (Call-out 2). Unplug one cable connector (Call-out 3) by pressing and releasing the tab on the side of the connector. Unplug two cable connectors (Call-out 4) by releasing a clip on each connector (see the detail in the lower-left corner of the following figure). Figure 9: DC Controller connectors and cables
