The message, Reinstall Transfer Belt or "54.6," will appear on the control panel under the following conditions: The Intermediate Transfer Belt (ITB) is not installed in the printer. Jammed media is blocking one or both middle front drawer connectors. The ITB connector or middle front drawer connector on the middle front drawer is broken. The home position marks on the ITB are not detected by sensor PS5. (This can be caused by toner or a foreign object blocking the home position window on the left side of the ITB. It can also be caused by a broken or defective PS5.) The ITB must rotate before PS5 is able to detect the "home positioning" marks on the ITB. The ITB is not rotating in the printer (a defective ITB or drum drive assembly can cause this). Turn the printer off. Remove the ITB and the middle front drawer. Check the middle front drawer connectors on the middle front drawer and in the printer chassis for jammed media or bent/broken pins (see Figure 1 call-out 2 and Figure 2 call-out 1).

Figure 2: Middle front drawer connector on the middle front drawer 1-Middle front drawer connector Jammed media or foreign material in one or both of these connectors can cause the Reinstall Transfer Belt message. Check the ITB connector and the ITB connector on the middle front drawer (see Figure 3). Replace the middle front drawer if the drawer connector is broken.
Figure 3: ITB with the ITB connector1- ITB connector Remove any jammed media or foreign material. Check the plastic windows that cover the home position detection holes on the ITB. Replace the ITB if necessary. NOTE: HP Color LaserJet 4500s within the listed serial number range (JPCD000000 - JPCF818000) can display the Reinstall Transfer Belt message continuously. The most likely cause of this error message is dirty home position windows located on the transfer belt. The old-style ITB has plastic windows that cover the home position detection holes on the belt. Over time, toner dust can build up on the plastic window and prevent PS5 from detecting a home position, which in turn causes the Reinstall Transfer Belt message. See service note C4084A-01. Reinstall the drawer and ITB and turn the printer on again. If the message appears again, proceed to Step 8. Turn the printer off again and remove the ITB and middle front drawer. Defeat the two switches (SW1 and SW4) and turn the printer on (see Figure 1, call-out 1). Observe the drum drive assembly drive mechanism and the imaging drum for rotation (see Figure 4) until the control panel reads, REINSTALL TRANSFER BELT." If the imaging drum is not rotating, verify that the drum connector is firmly seated into the connector J204 of the developing PCB. NOTE: The drum drive will take one to two minutes to begin rotating.
