Tray 1 not Lifting or 13.2 Paper Jam or 13.3 Paper Jam or 41.3 Improper Paper Size Error

HP LaserJet 5Si and 8000 Series Printers - Tray 1 not Lifting or 13.2 Paper Jam (5si) or 13.3 Paper Jam (8000) 41.3 Improper Paper Size Error Message When Printing from Tray 1

This document addresses situations when the printer will not pull paper from Tray 1. Any of the following error messages may be displayed on the printer control panel, they vary slightly by model. The separation roller for Tray 1 may spin, but the metal registration tray does not lift. The Tray 1 pickup assembly may require replacement. To resolve 13.2 paper jam or 41.3 improper paper size errors, perform the following procedures:

Perform a paper path test from Tray 1 to verify the issue.

Press down on the registration plate and release. The plate may be stuck down and will sometimes release. (See Figure 1, call-out 1.)

Replace the Tray 1 pickup assembly as necessary if the registration plate will not lift or if the error message will not clear.

Performing a paper path test from Tray 1

A paper path test allows each tray to be tested independently to confirm that a particular jamming issue is specific to one tray. This test can only be performed from the control panel of the printer. To generate a paper path test, perform the following steps:

5SI series printer

1. Press the MENU key until Test Menu appears in the printer display.

2. Press the ITEM key until Paper Path Test appears in the printer display.

3. Press the SELECT key to print a Paper Path Test.

4. Select the input tray in question by pressing + until the desired tray is displayed.

Press SELECT.

5. Select the Output bin in question pressing + until the desired bin is displayed.

Press SELECT.

6. Select the number of copies by pressing + until the desired number is displayed.

Press SELECT.

7. The Paper Path Test should start printing.

LaserJet 8000 series printers

1. Press the MENU key until INFORMATION MENU appears in the printer display.

2. Press the ITEM key until PAPER PATH TEST appears in the printer display.

Press SELECT.

3. Choose from the additional options and press SELECT again.

The PAPER PATH TEST should start printing.

NOTE: Tray 1 has one lifting plate solenoid. If the solenoid sticks the registration plate will not lift. To free the registration plate, perform a paper path test, and, after pushing the SELECT key the final time, press firmly on the 1.5-inch metal registration plate that is located in front of the separation roller (Figure 1.)

Replacing the tray 1 pickup assembly

Do the following to replace the Tray 1 pickup assembly:

Remove Tray 1, open the tray fully, and then partially close it until the distance between the retaining tab and the stop on the chassis is 0.25 inches.

Pull the right side of the tray outward to free the clip from the pin.

Raise the right side of the tray, and guide the white tab around the stop.

Slide the tray to the right to free the tray on the left side of the chassis (Figure 2).

Remove the tray.

Remove the front cover (Figure 3, call-outs 1 and 3).

Removing the back and right covers

Do the following to remove the back and right covers:

Remove five screws (Figure 4, call-out 1).

Open the top cover door, and remove one screw (Figure 4, call-out 2).

Open the 2000-sheet input tray transfer door (if installed), Tray 1, and the right lower door assembly (Figure 4, call-out 7).

Remove two screws (Figure 4, call-out 3) from the plastic panel to the left of the metal back cover.

Carefully release the cover around the AC input connector (Figure 4, call-out 4) at the lower right of the back cover, and slide the right side of the cover slightly forward.

Carefully release the retaining tabs (Figure 4, call-out 5) on the plastic panel to the left of the metal back cover by gently pulling the cover to the left while moving both pieces away from the printer chassis.

Removing the pickup assembly

Do the following to remove the pickup assembly

Disconnect the cables (Figure 5, call-outs 1 and 2) on the back of the printer.

Remove the cable from the cable guide (Figure 5, call-out 3).

Tilt the pickup assembly out of the chassis from the top, and then lift up to free it from the chassis.

1 and 2 - Reinstalling the tips

During reinstallation, seat the three tabs (Figure 8, call-out 1) behind the metal rail on the chassis. Then, pivot the pickup unit into place. The pickup unit has four locating pins that will engage guide holes in the chassis when the unit is aligned properly.

Comment J. Andrew Poth, P.E., 5-6-2006 @ 4:47pm

Consulting Engineer The problem of Tray 1 not lifting, particularly on older printers, is often due to dried-out grease on the plastic gears and cams. A qualified technician can disassemble the gear cluster, clean the parts and reassemble them. I suggest sparingly using a silicone grease such as G.E. G661, or equivalent, instead of the petroleum-based grease used by the factory. Before reinstalling the Tray 1 assembly in the printer, pluck the solenoid with a finger tip; it should move freely. If nothing else is wrong with Tray 1, in a pinch this can restore it to normal operation.
