HP LaserJet 5Si Series Printers - 13.2 Paper Jams from Trays 2 or 3IntroductionThis error indicates a paper delay jam. The paper did not reach PS1 at the registration area in the expected time. The Paper Input Unit (PIU) feeds paper to the registration assembly from Trays 2, 3, and the duplex unit. Some types of media may cause the second pass (or refeed) rollers to become slick after several hundred thousand pages. This condition may occur sooner in some environments. Due to the distance from Tray 3 to the registration area, the refeed rollers are needed to pull the paper out of the feed/separation rollers of Tray 3. When the refeed rollers are no longer able to grab the paper, a "13.2 PAPER JAM" will occur with a 13.01.02 posted in the error log. With letter or A4 size paper, the leading edge will be visible under the No. 3 jam clearance plate and the trailing edge will be stuck in the feed/separation rollers of Tray 3. Refer to the following sections for troubleshooting steps to isolate issue, printer disassembly, and instructions on verifying successful printer repair. Removing Trays 2 and 3 from the printer1. Remove all paper from the trays and verify that all the guides are set correctly for the size paper in them 2. Check the trays for damage such as broken paper size "fingers" on the back of the trays. Printing a configuration page 1. This page can only be performed from the control panel of the printer. To print a configuration page perform the following steps: 2. Press MENUS until Test Menu appears in the printer display. 3. Press ITEMS until PCL Configuration Page appears in the printer display. 4. Press SELECT to print the configuration page. 5. Look under the Printer Information section of the configuration page and verify that the pages since last maintenance are not beyond the 350,000-page interval specified for the printer. Printing the error log to verify how often errors occur This page can only be performed from the control panel of the printer. To print an error log, perform the following steps: 1. Press MENUS on the printer control panel. 2. Press MENUS until Test Menu appears in the printer display. 3. Press ITEMS until Print Error Log appears in the printer display. 4. Press SELECT. The Error Log should print out now. NOTE: If the printer constantly jams, view the error log on the control panel of the printer Viewing the error log, one error at a time 1. Press MENUS on the printer control panel. 2. Press MENUS until Test Menu appears in the printer display. 3. Press ITEMS until Show Error Log appears in the printer display. 4. Press ITEM until Paper Path Test appears in the printer display. 3. Press SELECT to print the Paper Path Test. 4. Select the Input Tray in question by pressing the + key until the desired tray is displayed. Press SELECT. 5. Press the Output Bin in question pressing the + key until the desired bin is displayed. Press SELECT. 6. Select Duplex = On or Off by pressing the + key. Press SELECT. 7. Select the number of copies by pressing the + key until the desired number count is displayed. Press SELECT. 8. The Paper Path Test should start printing. If the paper jams as the printer performs the paper path tests, check the following items 1. Check the white rollers on the lower right cover assembly for freedom of movement and correct positioning. The rollers could be slowing the paper movement, creating a timing issue. 2. Inspect the feed and separation rollers. Certain media can cause premature wear on the second-pass rollers of the PIU and on the feed and separation rollers. NOTE: Media with a glossy finish may have a low Sheffield rating. This media will feel slick and have a shiny finish that can glaze the rollers. Another cause is an accumulation of calcium carbonate, which is used in paper manufacturing. If the media has a high percentage of calcium carbonate, it may coat the rollers with a white powdery film that makes them slippery. This will cause the media to slip on the rollers. Washing the rollers in warm soapy water may remove this film. 3. Perform the paper path test again, this time, using legal-size paper in the trays. If Tray 3 jams with letter, A4, size paper but successfully performs the paper path test with legal size paper, then the second-pass rollers may be worn out. 4. The expected life of the PIU is approximately one million pages, if the page count of the printer is approaching one million pages, replace the PIU instead of the second-pass rollers based on the results of the previous steps. Removing the toner cartridge to verify that the registration sensor, PS1 is functional 1. Lift the metal flap with the green handle; it has a number 2 on it. Then lift the additional metal flap with a small number 3 on it. The PS1 registration sensor is located directly underneath it. 2. Press on the PS1 registration sensor, to verify that it is not sticking or broken. 3. If PS1 is sticking or broken it will need to be replaced.
