HP Color LaserJet 4600 and 4650 Printer Series - 13.09.00 Jam in Top Cover Area X Several issues may contribute to a 13.09 error message. Follow the troubleshooting below to isolate the cause. In some cases, the paper successfully leaves the paper pick unit, clearing PS3 and arrives at the fuser, and then triggers PS11. The paper then accordion jams in the fuser and never triggers PS12, causing a 13.09 JAM message. Remove the jammed media. Lift the top cover. Firmly lift the two green handles on either side of the fuser to disengage the fuser rollers. Open the fuser cover and remove the paper. Firmly press down on the two green handles on either side of the fuser to re-engage the fuser rollers. Remove the fuser and turn it upside down. Inspect the sensor flap for PS11. Replace the fuser if any sensor flags are broken. Install the fuser. Open the Electrostatic Transport Belt (ETB). Check for additional paper in the paper path. Verify that the trays are configured properly. Remove the tray(s) from the printer. Verify that the custom size switch is set correctly. Verify that the blue media width guides are set correctly. Verify that the blue rear media guide is set correctly. Place a fresh ream of paper in the tray after flexing (breaking) the ream. Make sure the corners of the media fit under the front tabs, and lock the paper down on the media lift plate. See Figure 1. Figure 1: Media lift plate
Isolate printing functionality from each tray before performing a Paper Path Test.
If the error does not clear, perform the sensor tests for PS11 and PS 12. To enter the Sensor test, do the following: Press MENU or (Select) to enter the Menus. Press (Down arrow) to Diagnostics, then press (Select). Press (Down arrow) to Sensor Test then press (Select). NOTE: The Control Panel will display letters A through H. Each letter corresponds with a particular sensor. See Figure 2. Figure 2: Control panel display for the sensor test when Tray 2 is loaded with letter-sized media

To trigger PS1, do the following: Open the top and front cover. Open the ETB. Reach into the fuser inlet, and feel for the PS11 sensor flag. Moving it back and forth, the value on the control panel should toggle between 1 and 0. At value 1, the sensor is not disturbed, and at 0 it is moved up. Verify that the value for PS12 switches between 0 and 1 when lifting up on the fuser. (The default position is 1). Replace the corresponding sensor if the sensor test fails. © 2005 Hewlett-Packard
