Multiple sheets of paper are pulled from either Tray 2 or tray 3 at the same time. The media generally feeds through the printer correctly, resulting in blank pages in a multi-page document, or a 41.3 UNEXPECTED PAPER SIZE error message. Multi-feeds can occur if the media is not properly loaded into the tray. This can be caused if the user fails to ensure that each time the tray is opened, the media lift plate is locked down, before it is inserted back into the printer. Locking the media lift plate in the down position places the leading edge of the paper in the correct pick position, underneath the metal corner tabs of the paper tray. NOTE: For the parts required section, replacement of the paper pickup assembly should only be considered if multi feeds are occurring from Tray 3, and if multi feeds occur if the media lift plate has been locked down before it is inserted back into the printer. Ensure that the media is loaded properly into the tray. Remove the tray from the printer and place it on a flat surface. Remove all media from the tray. Push down the metal media lift plate until it locks the paper down. See Figure 1. Figure 1: Metal lift plate
1- Metal lift plate Adjust the rear media-length guide by squeezing the blue guide adjustment latch and sliding the back of the tray to the length of the media being used. See Figure 2. Make sure it is set exactly on the letter notch, not behind or before. Figure 2: Adjusting the rear media-length guide
1- Rear media-length guide Slide the media-width guides open to the size for the media being used. Unwrap a fresh ream of media and "break" the ream by flexing it into a slight "u" shape. Bend in a "u" shape both ways. NOTE: Do not fan the media. Fanning can cause static electricity, which can cause media to stick together. Load the media in the tray, making sure that the corners of the media fit under the front metal corner tabs. Do not overfill the tray. Carefully insert the tray into the printer, making sure that the media remains under the metal corner tabs. Replace the paper pickup assembly only if replacing the tray and breaking the ream do not solve the issue. © 2005 Hewlett-Packard
