HP Install Network Printer Wizard - Printing in a Windows TCP/IP Network, a Windows IPX/SPX Network, or a Novell NDS Network

Printing in a Windows IPX/SPX network

Printing in a Novell NetWare NDS network

The HP Install Network Printer Wizard (INPW) can be found in the following places:

Downloaded from the HP Web site.
On the HP Jetdirect CD-ROM.
Bundled in the printer's CD-ROM installer (this may require restarting the computer when finished).
In most cases, it is recommended to use the printer's CD-ROM. To be sure that the most current version of INPW is being used, download it from the HP Web site. The most current version supports Microsoft(R) Windows 9x, Windows Me, Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP.

At any time during the configuration, click the Help button in the software for more information.

Printing in a Windows TCP/IP network
Printing the Configuration page to verify the status of the HP Jetdirect print server
There are at least two styles of printer control panels - "Classic" and "Flex". Classic control panels typically have Menu and Item buttons; Flex control panels have a check mark button and arrow buttons and/or a numeric keypad.
While this complicates things in an environment with many different types of HP printers, the basic navigation concepts apply: the HP Jetdirect Configuration is usually found on an Information menu and since it is an I/O port on the printer, configuration menus are usually on an I/O or EIO menu. Some printers can print a Menu Map to show what is available.

For Classic menus:
Use the MENU key on the Front Panel to go to the Information, Test, or PCL Test menu.
Press the ITEM key to go to the Print Configuration, Print EIO Configuration, PCL Configuration Page, or the Self Test.
Press Select, Go, or Enter.
For Flex Menus:
Press the check mark button to enter the menu system, press the down arrow button to Information.
Press the check mark button to enter the Information menu.
Press the down arrow button to Print Configuration.
Press the check mark button.
Printing Configuration pages from other printers or HP Jetdirect models
Designjet printers' control panels vary even more - their Configuration pages are usually under the Utilities menu and are called Service, Print Service Config, and Config Plot.
The HP LaserJet 2100, 2200, and similar printers will print a page when both buttons on top of the printer are pressed simultaneously.

External HP Jetdirects have a TEST button on the top or the back of the HP Jetdirect.

Restoring an HP Jetdirect to factory defaults
In some cases, it may be necessary to reset an HP Jetdirect print server to factory defaults. Resetting to factory defaults should remove any previous configurations, such as an old TCP/IP address, and verify that any error messages that appear on the Configuration page have not been resolved.

Internal HP Jetdirect cards: Most HP printers can be reset to factory defaults (or cold-reset) by turning the printer off and holding down ONLINE or GO while turning the printer on. Release the button when the printer control panel display reads, "Cold Reset" or "Restoring Factory Settings."
External HP Jetdirect print servers: Unplug the power cord from the HP Jetdirect device, then hold down the TEST button for at least five seconds while plugging in the power cord.
HP Designjet plotters: Many HP Designjet plotters cannot reset an HP Jetdirect device. HP Jetadmin can be used to reset the IPX/SPX settings; Telnet can be used to reset the TCP/IP settings. However, the HP Designjet 1050C, 1055CM, 500, and 800 series have a reset option in the control panel menus.

Windows TCP/IP when: IPX/SPX is not loaded or IPX/SPX is loaded but the HP Jetdirect print server is configured with an IP address.
Windows IPX/SPX when: IP is not loaded or IP is loaded, but the HP Jetdirect print server is not configured.

Figure 2: Network Settings

The HP Install Network Printer Wizard will also suggest Print Server and Printer object names for you, although typing in the areas provided can change these.
The software derives the Print Server Name and Printer Name from the printer model string. When the model string has embedded spaces, they are replaced by an underscore (_). In addition, each field value is made unique by using a suffix:

"_PS" for the print server
"_P" for the printer
"_Q" for the queue name
Before the HP Install Network Printer Wizard proposes these default names, the Novell server is queried to determine if the default names are valid. If the software is unable to generate default names, the fields will be left blank.

Select the NDS context by accepting the default and selecting Next, or change the context by typing it in, or select Browse to browse the NDS tree for the context, then click OK.
Specify the Print Queue name (Figure 3). As in the previous screen, the fields are filled with default values with all fields editable. Accept the defaults or add a new print queue to the server by typing a new queue name and selecting the queue volume from the drop-down menu.
Select Next to begin the printer driver installation.

Figure 3: Print Queue name

If a printer is already configured on the Netware server
If the printer is already configured on the server, the HP Install Network Printer Wizard can be used to create a new queue for the existing printer.

In this case, the existing NDS print server and printer objects will be displayed (and cannot be changed).

Figure 4: NDS objects are already configured

Click Next to display a screen for specifying the printer queue name. A default queue name will be displayed with all fields editable. Create a new print queue on the server by typing a new queue name and specifying the queue volume.
Select Next to begin the printer driver installation (see below).
Install the printer driver

Select a printer driver by one of two methods:
Select Use a currently installed driver.
Select Use a different driver.

Figure 5: Install printer driver

Select one of the follow under Use a different driver.
Check HP's Web site for a driver (automatic check).
Install a driver from a printer installation disk or driver file.
Select a driver from a list of drivers this PC knows about.

Figure 6: Driver Options

Depending on the option selected above, either browse to where the .INF file is located to install the driver, or select from a list of drivers supplied to you by HP INPW and click Next.
Provide a name for the printer and select Next.
The HP INPW will summarize the setup. Select Install.
At the Congratulations screen, click Finish. The software will send a test page to the printer.
