HP LaserJet 2300 Printers - TONER CARTRIDGE NOT RECOGNIZED Error Message Verify the root cause of this error. Verify that the print cartridge is an original HP print cartridge. Non-HP cartridges and refurbished cartridges will cause this error. Check to see if the main motor is rotating. Turn the printer off and remove the I/O cover. Verify that the gears are meshing by looking looking through the cutout in the printer chassis. See Figure 1. Figure 1: Gears on the right side of the printer 
Open the top (toner) door and watch as the gears separate. Then close the toner door and watch as the gears mesh together as in Figure 1.
Turn the printer on and watch the gears closely. If the gears rotate, but the TONER CARTRIDGE NOT RECOGNIZED message does not clear, replace the cartridge (part number: Q2610A). If the message does not clear after replacing the print cartridge and the gears continue to turn, replace the following parts: 110-127v Power Supply Assembly (RM1-0340-000CN) Spring, compression (RB2-6263-000CN) Spring, compression (RB2-6271-000CN) Spring, compression (RU5-2107-000CN) Spring, compression (RU5-2108-000CN) In this case, the power supply may be defective and the springs in Figure 2 may be bent or damaged.
