When printing envelopes, a toner smear or ghosting image may appear near the delivery address on the envelope. The image appears as a series of faint, black dots to the left of the delivery address when viewing the envelope as it appears below in the upright position. Figure 1: Toner smear or ghosting
Perform the following to correct the issue: Verify Tray 1 or the Envelope Feeder Size is set to Envelope #10. Verify Tray 1 or the Envelope Feeder Type is set to Envelope. NOTE: If Envelope Feeder Type = Plain, the printer will prompt to load Envelope Plain in tray 1 or press the Select (check mark button) to print from another tray. Verify Fuser Mode for Envelope equals High 1 or High 2 (High 1 is the preferred setting). Verify the settings in Page Setup within the application match the settings for the printer. This is necessary for the product to correctly print the envelopes. NOTE: See the application help files or support for assistance with these settings. Set the Fuser Mode for the Envelope to High 1 or High 2. Press Select (check mark button), and scroll down to CONFIGURE DEVICE. Press Select, and scroll down to PRINT QUALITY. Press Select, and scroll down to FUSER MODES. Press Select, and scroll down to ENVELOPE. Press Select, and scroll down to HIGH 1 or HIGH 2. Press the MENU button to return to exit the menu and return to the Ready state. Verify the envelopes are within printer's supported specifications. The toner smear (ghosting) issue is typically caused by a combination of events: the engine speed, fuser mode, and thickness of the envelope. The standard settings for plain media do not permit the engine speed and fuser mode adequate time for the thickness of the media to fuse the toner to the page. By modifying the settings, the engine speed is slowed sufficiently to permit the fuser to work with the media, thereby correcting the print quality issue.
