How to Perform a Firmware Update

NOTE: Before running a firmware update, turn off the HP Color LaserJet 2600n printer, and then turn it on again. When performing more than one firmware upgrade (for example, an engine firmware upgrade and a formatter firmware upgrade), power cycle the printer after the first firmware upgrade is completed and before starting the second firmware upgrade.

The configuration page lists the firmware version of the printer. On flash-memory-based printers, you can update the firmware code by downloading the latest flash executable for the printer and running the program according to the Readme instructions that come with it. If the firmware should become corrupted or fail (usually because of an interruption when attempting to update the firmware), the printer may no longer function. You can download the firmware update flash executable for the HP Color LaserJet 2600n printer from the following Web site: http://www.hp.com/support/clj2600n and select "download drivers and software" from the left menu bar.

Performing a firmware update

Firmware updates can be performed if the printer is directly connected through a USB cable or if the printer is networked using on-board networking.

Firmware update instructions for a direct connection

You need the following items in order to update the firmware for your HP Color LaserJet 2600n series printer.

Flash firmware .EXE file
The HP Color LaserJet 2600n printer driver installed so that you can send print jobs to the printer.

Follow these instructions to complete the firmware update.

Print a Self Test/Configuration page. The Self Test/Configuration page will print. Under the Product Information heading note the Firmware Version. This version will change after you have successfully completed the firmware update.

Press (LEFT ARROW) or (RIGHT ARROW) to select the Reports menu.

Press (SELECT).

Press (LEFT ARROW) or (RIGHT ARROW) to select Config Report.

Press (SELECT) to print the Configuration Report page.

Verify that Ready message appears on the printer control panel display.

Locate the .EXE firmware file on your computer.

Double-click the .EXE firmware file. The following dialog box appears.

Click the down arrow next to the Select Printer to Update drop-down list and select the HP Color LaserJet 2600n.

Click Start to begin the update process.

CAUTION: Interrupting the firmware update process by turning the printer off and then turning it on again or by attempting to send a print job to the printer might cause the printer to go into an unrecoverable state.

If the frown face icon appears in the dialog box, an error has occurred. Check to make sure printer is on and in a Ready state. Verify that you can send print jobs to the printer, and then try again to perform the firmware update.

The upgrade process is complete when the happy-face icon appears in the dialog box.

Click Exit to close the dialog box.

Turn the printer off and then turn it on again.

Print a Self Test/Configuration page by pressing the SELECT button on the printer control panel to enter the Main Menu. Press the SELECT button again to enter the Reports Menu, use the right or left arrow buttons to navigate to the Config Report, and then press the SELECT button. The Self Test/Configuration page will print. Locate the Firmware Version section under the Product Information heading and verify that the version has changed.
