58.X, 58.4, and 58.3 Control Panel Error Messages

This will help to resolve 58.X errors, in particular 58.3 and 58.4 errors. Follow the appropriate troubleshooting steps based on the specific error message. The most likely cause of this error message is related to the print cartridge.

For a 58.4 error verify that the customer is using a genuine HP Print cartridge. If not, explain to the customer that HP cannot provide support until a genuine HP Print Cartridge is installed as the most likely cause of the error is the print cartridge. If the customer is using a third party (non-hp) cartridge, they are responsible for purchasing a new HP cartridge before troubleshooting can proceed further.

If the customer does not know if the print cartridge is a genuine HP print cartridge, have them remove it from the printer and examine it, paying particular attention to the following points:

Check the color of the drum, a genuine HP print cartridge drum is seafoam green. If the drum is metallic in color, it is probably a third party (non-hp) drum.

Check the labeling on the print cartridge, a genuine HP print cartridge will have labels affixed to the cartridge.

Check for the presence of screws and brackets attached to the shell of the print cartridge. This is a sign of a third party )non-hp) print cartridge.

Check the e-chip reader on the print cartridge. A genuine HP print cartridge does not have any labeling on the e-chip reader, if there is a label on the e-chip reader this is a sign that the print cartridge is a third party (non-hp) cartridge.

If the customer is unable to determine if the print cartridge is a genuine HP cartridge, send the customer a return shipper with instructions to send the print cartridge back to you. Explain to them that if, after analyzing the print cartridge it is determined to be a genuine HP print cartridge a new HP cartridge will be shipped overnight to them.

CAUTION: Under no circumstances should HP be sending customers new HP print cartridges until it has been determined the cartridge in the printer is a genuine HP cartridge.

Try another genuine HP print cartridge. If the second print cartridge does not fix the error or the customer does not have another print cartridge to try, then send all the parts listed in the parts table.

Low Voltage Power Supply (LVPS)

RG5-5730-000CN or C8519-69007

Print Cartridge

C8543X

Toner Sensor Contact Assembly

RG5-5719-000CN

DC Controller

RG5-5778-000CN

For 58.3 and any other 58.X errors except 58.4 follow the instructions in the Service Manual for 58.X errors. The applicable parts listed in the Service Manuel for 58.X errors are included in the parts table.

For 58.4 errors perform the following troubleshooting in the order listed:

Replace the print cartridge first before doing anything else as this is the most likely cause for this error. if the error clears up, return all unused parts back to HP. If the error still does not clear then continue with the troubleshooting.

Turn off the printer and remove the print cartridge.

Turn the printer back on with the print cartridge still removed and wait for the warm up cycle to complete, this will take a couple of minutes.

If, after the printer completes its warm up cycle the control panel displays a 58.4 error then proceed to the next section titled "Check voltages."

If the control panel displays the message Install Cartridge, then install the print cartridge. If the error clears up, return all unused parts to HP.

If a 58.3 error is displayed on the control panel then replace the following parts:
Toner Sensor Contact Assembly
DC Controller

Check voltages

With the printer powered on, measure the voltage on the cable that plugs into J201 on the DC Controller PCA. While connected, the voltage values on each line should measure as follows:
Pin A1 5v (brown)
Pin B1 3.3v (yellow)
Pin A2 3.3v (yellow)
Pin B2 3.3v (yellow)
Pin A5 24v (red)

NOTE: All blue wires are ground, for the voltmeter ground probe, use chassis ground.

If the voltage readings are not acceptable, replace the Low Voltage Power Supply (LVPS).

Acceptable voltage ranges are as follows:

5v = 4.75v minimum to 5.25v maximum
3.3v = 3.2v minimum to 3.4v maximum
24v = 24v + or - 10%

Test the printer again.
If the errors have cleared, return any unused parts to HP. If the errors are still present, replace the following parts:
Toner Sensor Contact Assembly
DC Controller
