HP Color LaserJet 4600 and 5500 Series Printers - Blank Control Panel Display The printer’s display panel will have a blank display after it is turned on. The firmware DIMM may contribute to various symptoms relating to the printer sticking or hanging during initialization (the printer will not warm up and come to a READY state). Verify that the printer powers on (fans are running, etc.). Verify that the formatter light is blinking or steady. See below for normal formatter operation. If the formatter light is not blinking, proceed to Step 3. 4 fast bursts at power on 1 blink per 8MB of memory testing Off for 8 seconds and then 1 blink per second after the asterisk leaves the screen and initializing is displayed on the control panel Turn the printer off and unplug the printer. Remove the HP Jetdirect card, third-party device, hard disk, parallel cable, or IFR cable from the formatter if one is installed. Remove any non-HP memory (if installed). Remove the eight screws around the formatter and pull the formatter from the printer. See Figure 1. Figure 1: Formatter
Reseat the Firmware DIMM into the slot labeled J1. See Figure 2. Figure 2: Firmware DIMM
Reseat the formatter and turn the printer on, using a cold reset. Verify that the formatter light is blinking, and then print an engine test. If the formatter light is blinking and an engine test prints successfully, but the control panel is still blank, replace the control panel. If the formatter light is not functioning and the printer continues to show a blank display, replace the firmware and possibly the Formatter.
