HP Color LaserJet 9500 Series Printers Removal and replacement of the secondary transfer assembly (also called the T2 assembly) is not particularly time consuming; however, it must be done very carefully to ensure that nothing gets damaged when removing the old T2 assembly and when reinstalling the new T2 assembly into the printer. Properly removing and reattaching the arms on both ends of the T2 assembly is critical to ensure it works properly. Pay close attention to the instructions, they must be done in exactly the order listed. Secondary Transfer Assembly (T2) - RG5-6179-000CN General cautions during removal and replacement Before removing or replacing assemblies and parts note the following: Make sure the printer is turned off. Disconnect all cables and cords. If the printer has been running continuously prior to servicing, turn the power off but leave the printer plugged in so the cooling fans can run for at least 10 minutes before unplugging the power cord. Always remove the image drums before removing or replacing assemblies and parts that are near the drums. CAUTION: Put the image drums in their original protective plastic sleeves, or, if the sleeves are not available, place the image drums right-side up on a hard, flat, clean surface. Do not place the image drums on carpet or a dusty surface because contaminants (for example dust and fibers) can stick to the OPCs and diminish print quality. Light can damage the image drums very quickly (in a matter of minutes). Initial disassembly instructions 1. Remove the four image drums (process cartridges). This allows more light into the printer to better see the internal parts for teardown and reassembly. If installed during the T2 removal process, they may be damaged. 2. Remove the transfer roller. 3. If equipped, remove the duplexer. 4. Remove the fuser. 5. Remove the Intermediate Transfer Belt (ITB). 6. Remove the right front door (this makes it easier to remove the T2 assembly from the printer). WARNING: Please note that the position of the green lever is noted in the these instructions. Be sure the lever is in the proper position as indicated in the instructions during disassembly and reassembly of the printer Advanced disassembly instructions Remove one screw (Call-out 1 below), and remove the T2 access cover (Call-out 2 below). Figure 1: Removing the T2 cam access door1 - Remove this screw2 - Then remove this access cover
Remove two screws (Call-out 1 below), and remove the plastic bearing surface (Call-out 2 below). Figure 2: Removing the T2 bearing surface1 - Remove two screws2 - Then remove plastic bearing surface
Remove the link cover (Call-out 1 below). NOTE: The green lever must be up. Figure 3: Removing the T2 link cover1 - Link cover
Slide the spring (Call-out 1 below) off the shaft to the left and out of the chassis. Figure 4: Removing the T2 cam spring1 - T2 cam spring
Now lower the green lever. Located on the printer's firewall, (right side) remove the cable cover by pinching its sides (Call-out 1 below). Figure 5: T2 wire harness cover1 - Cable cover
Disconnect one connector (Call-out 1 below), and carefully remove two links (Call-outs 2 and 3 below). CAUTION: Make sure to remove the cable cover carefully, this is because the cables are retained in the channel on the right side of the cover. Located on the printer's firewall, (right side) remove the link (Callout 3 below) by lifting it up and away from the shaft. The link (Callout 2 below) is removed by sliding it directly off of the shaft. Figure 6: Removing the T2 link (1 of 2)1 - Disconnect this connector2 - Remove this link3 - Remove this link
Located on the left side towards the inside front of the printer, remove the closest link (Call-out 1 below) first. The link is removed by unsnapping the plastic collar from the shaft and sliding the link out. This link (Call-out 2 below) is not captive. WARNING: This link is not included when ordering a replacement or exchange secondary transfer (T2) assembly. Do not lose or bend this link. Remove the other link (Call-out 2 below) by pushing the link up and pulling it out. Figure 7: Removing the T2 link (2 of 2)1 - Remove this link first2 - Remove this link second
Instructions on how to remove the T2 assembly from the printer To physically remove the T2 assembly from the printer, carefully do the following: Position yourself on the right (ITB access) side of the printer. Grasp the secondary transfer (T2) assembly with both hands. Rotate the secondary transfer (T2) assembly up and toward you. Slide the secondary transfer (T2) assembly to the left to release the assembly's shaft from the printer's chassis. Swing the right side of the secondary transfer (T2) assembly up and toward you. Remove the secondary transfer (T2) assembly. Figure 8: Removing the T2 assembly
Reinstallation tips CAUTION: Make sure to not bend the links. Make sure that the four links are positioned upward and connected completely. Make sure that the green lever is down. Locate the secondary transfer assembly shaft hole before replacing the assembly. The reinstall motion is the opposite of the removal motion. Be careful not to break off the black plastic pins near the links on either side of the T2 assembly. If a pin is broken, the green lever will move up, but will not move back down once the ITB is installed. Make sure that the connector is not entangled when reinstalling the links. Make sure that the four links are reinstalled correctly and rotating the green lever to verify unimpeded motion. Test this by gently rotating the green lever to verify that motion is not impeded. CAUTION: Do not force the green lever if it does not rotate easily. Make sure that both connectors are firmly seated and that the wires are not pinched by the cover. The cover must be installed because it retains a link. To reinstall the finger guard, pull back on the spring and push the finger guard onto the large shaft. When properly installed, the spring is behind the finger guard. The finger guard must seat correctly on two shafts. © 2005 Hewlett-Packard
