66.11.XX Messages on Control Panel

To resolve these 66.11.XX errors use the following information depending on the symptoms the HP Color LaserJet 9500hdn, HP LaserJet 9000 or 900MFP series printer or MFP is experiencing:

Make sure media (letter size) is not loaded on both sides of the tray. Also, have the customer verify that something other than paper is not in the empty side of the tray. The paper lift sensor only checks for paper loaded on the right side of the tray when looking at it from the front of the printer. Remove all media and power cycle the printer or MFP.

Placing paper on the left side, or using very heavy media, can result in the Deck Drive Assembly Coupling and/or the 16T Gear to break. In addition, the drawer cables system can be damaged. This will result in a grinding sound during lift and ultimately a 66.11.00 error displaying on the Control Panel. Replace the Deck Drive Assembly if the Coupling and/or 16T Gear is broken. Replace the Tray Drawer if the cables system is damaged.

Reseat all paper guides and power cycle unit making sure to move the guides through their range of movement before coming to rest on the proper paper size.

Inspect the paper size sensing assembly, it should be flush and not at an angle, also check the fingers in the assembly.

Verify if Tray 4 is actually lifting.

If the specific error is a 66.11.01 then make sure the PPCU is installed.

This type of failure is typically a true lift failure. The 66.11.XX series errors indicate that upon the tray lifting a failure has occurred: This failure can be troubleshot to two different failure modes, check the following in the order listed.

Make sure media (letter size) is not loaded on both sides of the Tray. The paper lift sensor only checks for paper loaded on the right side of the tray when looking at it from the front of the printer. Remove all media and power cycle the printer or MFP.

Reseat all paper guides and power cycle unit making sure to move the guides through their range of movement before coming to rest on the proper paper size.

Check Tray 4 cabling that the paper deck is suspended on; ensure all cables are routed properly around the paper deck drive and the tray itself, see the figure below.

Figure 1: Deck drive

If the error persists, open the tray after getting the failure code and note the position of the paper deck. Verify the following:

Deck is lifted all the way up to the pickup assembly when opening (usually a grinding noise with this scenario). This scenario indicates the deck and the deck drive are working correctly and the problem is with the tray lift sensor on the Tray 4 paper input unit (PIU). Remove the paper input unit (PIU) and inspect flags for proper movement. Replace paper input unit (PIU) if damage to the flags is found.

Verify that the PPCU is installed. The control panel message will vary depending on the firmware version. Older firmware help messages will direct the user to check all cable connections and cycle power, while new firmware will have the control panel display a message telling the customer to verify it is installed. In both cases a 66.11.01 error will initially be displayed on the printer's control panel.

The Paper Deck is not at the top of the tray. This scenario indicates the problem is a physical lifting issue with the tray.

A new cause for 66.11.00 errors when the paper deck fails to lift has been found. When the tray 4 drawer is closed it latches onto pins on both the left and right sides of the tray 4 frame. These pins have a range of movement and are set at the factory roughly in the middle of this range. A few cases have been seen where a misalignment of these pins from each other has caused 66.11.00 errors. A readjustment of these pins to bring both sides of the tray into alignment with each other can resolve the issue without replacing any parts. However, the deck drive could be damaged from a gross misalignment.

Place Tray 4 into service mode and run the motor test with the tray fully loaded with paper. If a grinding sound is heard and a 66.11.00 error appears after 45 seconds, then the Deck Drive Assembly Coupling (Clutch) and/or the 16T Gear is broken. Replace the Deck Drive Assembly.

If the deck drive is turning and inspection of the deck drive gear yields no obvious problems, the issue is most likely with the drawer. Remove the Tray 4 drawer and inspect the cabling that the deck is suspended on (Figure 1) as well as the drive gear on the back of the drawer inside the Tray 4 opening. (Remove the Tray 4 drawer to inspect the deck drive bushing), see the figure below.

Figure 2: Deck drive bushing

There is also an issue where the printer will get this error intermittently. Typically, this will occur after opening the tray to fill it up with paper on a long print job. Please check the paper size sensing assembly for a stuck button, see Figures 3 and 4 below. Figure 3 shows the correct position of the "fingers" with the drawer removed and Figure 4 shows one of the "fingers" stuck inside the assembly. Another way to test this type of failure is to let the machine come to ready and open Tray 4. If the control panel posts Tray 4 lifting rather then Tray 4 opening, then the issue is related to the paper size sensing assembly. If this is found, remove the paper size sensing assembly and pop the "finger" or fingers back out, and then reinstall it. If the "fingers" keep binding up or the assembly is damaged, then replace it.

Figure 4: One finger stuck (incorrect position)

Inspect the paper size sensing assembly. It should be flush and not at an angle. Remove and reinstall it if it is not installed flush.

Paper size sensor troubleshooting:

Remove the rear panel on the Tray 4.
Remove the paper size sensor assembly.
Place the Tray 4 into service mode and test each sensor by performing the sensor test.
Replace the paper size sensor assembly if it fails the test.
