HP Color LaserJet 9500hdn, LaserJet 9000, 9000mfp, 9040mfp, and 9050mfp Series Printers Equipped with 2000 Sheet Input. How to Perform the Tray 4 Paper Alignment Procedure The following instructions are used to align the paper stack in tray 4 for proper centering of media in the tray or aligning text to match a preprinted form. This is performed by using the blue adjusters on either side of tray 4 to adjust the physical alignment of the paper stack position in the tray. NOTE: Normally this procedure should not need to be performed. The most common reasons for doing so would be either of the following: Excessive 13.12.0d errors if the HP LaserJet 9000 or HP LaserJet 9000 MFP equipped with a 3000 sheet stapler/stacker is experiencing these errors only when printing to the stapler/stacker. Excessive 13.12.00 duplexer jams if the they occur when printing from tray 4 only. Precisely dial in the text alignment to a preprinted form being printed from tray 4. Match the tray 4 alignment to that of tray 2 and or tray 3. NOTE: It is not necessary to send a technician for this issue, this procedure can be performed with the customer. Set the expectation that this procedure is one of trial and error. After making an adjustment each time it will be necessary to print in order to test the result. A further fine tuning of the alignment can be performed using the Registration adjustments from the control panel. It is very important to first identify if there actually is an alignment issue that can be resolved by performing this procedure. Make the customer aware that Tray 4 has the longest paper path and because of this the accuracy when printing from tray 4 may not be as good as trays 2 and 3 which have a shorter paper path. Have the customer try printing from one of those trays and see if the alignment is satisfactory. If it is suggest they use those trays to print those jobs that require the most precise alignment. If the customer must use Tray 4 to print their jobs (such as large numbers of preprinted forms), are experiencing excessive 13.12.0d errors and the printer has a 3000 sheet stapler stacker attached or want to more closely match the alignment to trays 2 and 3 then perform the alignment procedure with the customer. Adjusting Tray 4 Registration using the Blue Levers NOTE: Before performing the procedure its a good idea to print out a Registration Page and verify that the "X" shift is set to "0" (Zero) or if it has been previously changed the Registration Page will show what the settings are. To perform the procedure do the following: Load Letter or A4 size paper in Tray 4. Perform a single (One) sheet Paper Path Test from Tray 4. See the Figure below and compare the distance A to distance B from the paper path test. Figure 1: Paper Path Test Results
The following figures show the Tray 4 adjusters located on each side of tray that are visible when it is opened. The arrows in the Figures indicate the front the of the tray. By moving the blue adjusters to the different alignment holes it changes the physical alignment of the tray. Make the same adjustment to both levers, right and left, or skewing may occur. Adjusting the levers towards the front of the tray moves the paper stack towards the back of tray 4 and the border on the paper path test will print closer to top of page. (Vice versa if you adjust the levers towards the back of the tray). Print another paper path test from tray 4 and compare it again. If desired, compare to the same paper path test pages from tray 2 or tray 3 if trying to match the alignment to those trays. Repeat until the tray 4 paper path test border is properly centered or matches that of the tray 2 or tray 3 paper path test. Figure 2: Adjuster on one side of tray 4
Figure 3: Adjuster on other side of tray 4
NOTE: The blue adjusters are not labeled to indicate which hole they are in. Have the customer take a felt marker and label the holes (for example 1,2,3, etc.) before making any adjustments. This will allow the adjusters to be put back into the original holes if needed as well as making sure they are adjusted equally on both sides. NOTE: Each Adjustment notch of the Blue lever on each side on the side of Tray 4 will move the physical position of the tray by .5mm for an overall adjustment of 2.5mm. Moving the lever forward will Decrease distance "A" Moving the lever towards the back of the Tray will increase distance "A" If distance "A" is greater than Distance "B" by more than 0.5mm, move the adjustment lever forward. If distance "A" is less than distance "B" by more than 0.5mm, move the adjustment lever towards the back. After each adjustment attempt print another single Paper Path Test and compare. Recheck measurements and Readjust as necessary. If there is still minor differences (less than 0.5mm) or the customer now wants to adjust the print on the paper up or down use the registration settings for Tray 4 on the printer under the PRINT QUALITY/SET REGISTRATION Menus. NOTE: Its important to first get the physical alignment of the paper stack in Tray 4 dialed in as close as possible hen perform the registration adjustment from the control panel to adjust the printed image/text on the page. © 2005 Hewlett-Packard
