This document explains how to replace the registration roller and frame assemblies. The procedure to replace the frame assembly is not in the service manual. The registration roller assembly must be removed to obtain access to the registration frame. The following sections detail how to remove first the registration roller, and then frame assemblies. Registration roller assembly removal Open the front door and unlock the transfer drum. Open the right door and remove the transfer drum and belt. Remove the front right cover. Remove the screw holding the round green registration knob and remove the knob (see Figure 1, call-out 1). Remove the inner cover shown in Figure 1, call-out 2. It has four screws. Figure 1: Inner cover and registration knob1-Registration knob location 2-Inner cover to be removed
There are four screws holding the registration roller assembly in place. Lift up on the paper diverter and remove two screws. The other two are on the back. To see these, look through the opening in the front of the printer (see Figure 2, call-out 1). Figure 2: Back registration screws 1-One of the two registration screws on the backside of the registration roller assembly
Unplug the connector going to the registration clutch on the right side. It can be unplugged either on the clutch itself or where it connects into the printer (see Figure 3, call-out 1). Figure 3: Registration connectors 1-Registration clutch cable 2-Registration frame connectors
Gently lift the registration roller assembly out of the printer. Registration frame removal There are two screws that must be loosened before removing the registration frame assembly, and tightened after reinstalling the new frame assembly. See Figure 4, call-outs 1 and 2 for the location of these screws. Figure 4: Registration screw1-Loosen this screw 2-Loosen this screw
There are two screws that must be removed to get the registration frame assembly out of the printer. They are difficult to see without a flashlight. They are located on the top toward the ends of the assembly. For easier access to the screws, lift up on the paper diverter flap. After removing the two screws, the registration frame assembly has two small locating tabs that must be released to remove the assembly from the printer. Gently move the assembly around to unclip these two tabs. Lift up on the front part of the frame to release the tabs. Figure 5, call-out 1 shows one of the tabs on the assembly out of the printer. Figure 5: Registration frame locating tabs 1-One of the two locating tabs
Unplug the remaining two connectors on the right side and lift the frame assembly out of the printer. See Figure 3, call-out 2 for the location of these connectors. During reassembly make sure the gears mesh together properly. The transparency sensors on the registration frame are precisely aligned; do not jar them out of position. © 2005 Hewlett-Packard
