This technical work instruction outlines how to replace the tray 2 paper pick-up roller on the HP LaserJet series printer. This procedure will also work on for replacing the pick-up roller on any optional paper trays installed on the product. Tray 2 Paper Pick-up Roller RL1-0542-000CN
CAUTION: Be careful not to damage the tray 2 legal dust cover when tipping the printer onto the rear cover. Either remove the dust cover or use caution when tilting the unit. Unplug the unit and remove the optional tray 3 accessory (if installed), the print (toner) cartridge, and the tray 2 cartridge from the printer. Rotate the bushings upward on each side of the roller to unlock the pick-roller.
With the bushing lock still in the "up" position, slide the left-side bushing to the left, away from the pick-roller. The bushings are "keyed", so it may be necessary to wiggle them up and down.
NOTE: The arm of the bushing is at the 3 o'clock or 9 o'clock position when keyed with the holes. Slide the roller and shaft toward the left until they clear the hole in the right-side bushing. Then life the right end of the shaft, leaving the right-side bushing in the unit.
Lift the pick-up roller and two rubber wheels ("paper pick-up idlers") on the shaft out of the printer. Be aware that the left-side bushing may fall off and out of the printer.
Remove the two rubber wheels ("paper pick-up idlers") from the old pick-roller and install onto the new pick-roller. Insert the left side of the pick-roller shaft into the unit, and insert the left-side bushing onto the pick-roller shaft.
Slide both to the right and into the right-side bushing, making sure to key both bushings through the chassis towards the center of the printer as much as possible. There should be no more than 1mm in side-to-side movement of the pick-roller and paper pick-up idlers when positioned correctly.
Re-lock both the left-side and right-side bushings by rotating the arms downward.

Print a configuration page with the new tray roller to test the printer functionality.
